John Chi-Chiang Sung of Gainesville, Florida, passed peacefully on January 2, 2024 at the age of 92. Born on December 19, 1931, in Suzhou, China. He emigrated from China to the United States of America through Ellis Island, New York and is memorialized on the Ellis Island Wall of Honor. He is remembered as a kind, patient, and generous husband, father, grandfather, and gentleman, always willing to help and serve others.
John was a proud University of Florida Gator graduate, where he studied animal sciences and earned his B.S. degree. There, he met his wife of 65 years, Margaret Y.F. Sung, and is also survived by his daughter, Stella C.Y. Sung, son, John C.E. Sung, and his two granddaughters, Jasmine M. Sung and Ava L. Sung.
He was an entrepreneur, owning his own dental lab, and was a successful land developer, real estate investor, restaurateur, and retail business owner.
John was an avid tennis player, and was an active Rotarian, elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, FL, and with the U.F. Friends of Music. John and his wife Margaret, also established the John and Margaret Sung Family Fine Arts Fellowship at the University of Florida School of Music, which supports graduate fellowships in composition and conducting.
