Hi there, in the IELTS Speaking test, it is generally recommended to use more formal language and avoid overly informal expressions. While “yeah” is a common conversational way of saying “yes,” it is advisable to use “yes” instead during the test. Using more standard and formal language demonstrates your ability to communicate effectively in a professional setting, which is what the IELTS exam assesses. I hope this helps! John is correct in that using personal pronouns is completely fine in the speaking exam.

Exactly, if you can naturally use these phrases in conversation, that’s fantastic. However, there is a common theme of students misusing these phrases and therefore negatively affecting their scores.

I’m guessing Gurkirat meant could he use personal pronouns like ‘you’. However, I’ve decided to take that literally and have used “Ruth Chambers” in a test. Worked well for me 🙂

Here is my unsolicited advice: no problem using ‘you’. ‘we’, and other personal pronouns. For the first two tasks, it’s all about you – or “I”.

All the best Gurkirat, and you too, Ruth:-)

I agree with Becca’s comments, though i guess it is all in how some of these words/ phrases are said. Produced with poor intonation – like a robot – then vocab like ‘incidentally’ could seem very rehearsed. Quite difficult to relegate some words to either the formal or informal category. Incidentally… 🙂
